Posted by Toolstop on 7th Aug 2017
The battle for a truly cordless work site continues in 2017 with Metabo, once again, upping the stakes.
Metabo first to market with 4.0Ah Li-ion, 5.2Ah Li-ion, first to launch batteries using 20700 cells (LiHD) and now the first with a new type 20700 cell giving us 7.0Ah of charge capacity.

Metabo’s New LiHD Battery Packs for 2017 – What You Need to Know
Essentially there are two components to a lithium-ion battery that matter to you. The type of cells and the storage capacity. As we learned when the LiHD packs were launched last year (read our full report here), the cells used in these packs are paired with “High Demand” applications, such as cordless grinding and cutting of metal, drilling massive holes and driving huge, long screws.
And now, with the 2017 update, you can marry the Metabo LiHD high demand cells with massive storage. 7Ah, to be precise, in the new 18v LiHD battery packs.
In real-world terms, the 18v 7Ah LiHD batteries will give you 67% more power to the business end of the cordless tool, and 100% more runtime that a 4Ah battery. Let that sink in.
Metabo’s New LiHD Battery Packs for 2017 – What’s On Offer
The new stable of batteries is broken down into three new considerations.
- 18v 7Ah LiHD, as outlined above
- Flat Pack 3.5Ah packs
- 36v LiHD packs, delivering an industry-leading 2400W of power
And on top of that, there’s a slew of new cordless tools engineered to take advantage of this battery technology. More on that in the near future.
Let’s have a look at what the new “Flat Pack” LiHD batteries offer.
Firstly, great ergonomics. These may be 3.5Ah, but the cells match the power found in the larger 4Ah batteries. The new, lower profile design is 180g lighter and 20mm flatter. What this translates into for the real world is a battery that will make your tool lighter, more powerful and better suited for eye-level or over the head applications. Metabo states that you’ll fatigue before the battery runs out. These batteries are ideal for slotting into your existing 18v Metabo cordless tools.
What about the new Metabo 36v LiHD batteries?
These are potentially ground-breakers. While there are 54v packs on the market right now, Metabo is the first power tool company to deliver batteries that will power 2400W motors. Again, in real world terms, that means they can manufacture a cordless grinder that takes 230mm diameter discs spinning at 6600rpm, while give you a cutting depth of a whopping 77mm.
What’s the charge capacity of the new 36v LiHD batteries? An eye-watering 6.2Ah
With more and more job-sites insisting on cordless where possible, it’s great to see the cordless power tool revolution moving onwards and upwards, with Metabo marrying up the need for long run times with the demand for high-draw applications.
More on Metabo LiHD tools to come in the near future.
