Posted by Toolstop Katy on 15th Aug 2018

With more and more of us leaving the world of power cords and transformers on-site behind, the viability of having a battery-powered kit is becoming more and more sustainable.

In this Toolstop Guide, we’ll look at the discipline of woodworking and showcase 5 cordless tools from Dewalt that will easily replace the corded versions you’re currently using.

Each of the tools will be juiced by Dewalt’s 18v XR range. If you’d like more information on the more powerful 54v XR FlexVolt platform, please see this guide.

Dewalt Cordless Mitre Saw for Woodworking – What’s the Best?

An essential woodworking tool is the trusty mitre saw. Whether you’re ripping, mitring, trenching or trimming, a mitre saw will be in your kit. We’ve picked an 18v mitre saw from Dewalt that will handle all these tasks with ease.

We’ve selected the Dewalt DCS365M2 Mitre Saw 18V Cordless, which we’ve bundled with 4Ah batteries (2 of them) and a charger. Click/Tap here to see it.

Each of the 4Ah batteries will give you around 200 cuts per charge into softwood of 75x50mm. And the cutting spec on the DCS365 is impressive:

  • Cutting Capacity at 90°/90° (W x H): 250 x 50 mm
  • Cutting Capacity at 45°/90° (W x H): 176 x 50 mm
  • Cutting Capacity at 90°/45° (W x H): 250×35 mm
  • Max. Cutting Capacity at 45°/45°: 176×35 mm

It runs blades up to 184mm in diameter at up to 3750RPM. Spinning the blade is Dewalt’s double insulated  65 mm fan cooled motor with replaceable brushes for maximum power in hardwood. The aluminium base construction provides stability to the saw while still retaining its portability, and extending side rails will support longer work pieces.

The portability of this Dewalt mitre saw is another great benefit, as it features carry handles to make it easier to get it from the van to where you need it to be.

The DCS365 is available here, and qualifies for Toolstop Finance. Add it to your Dewalt cordless woodworking kit today.

Dewalt Cordless Vacuum for Woodworking – What’s the Best?

Another important tool for both site and workshop work is a vacuum cleaner. Being able to run your vac from a battery is a huge advantage, especially when hooking it up to battery powered tools!

With that in mind, we’ve selected the Dewalt DCV584L 14.4/18V/Flexvolt 54V Cordless/Corded XR Wet/Dry Vacuum.

Yes, it’s a bit of a mouthful, so we’ll break it down. Firstly, it’s a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, which simply means it’ll handle spills and dirt and debris. However, you can use the hose to hook it up to the dust extractor port of your mitre saw, sander, planer etc.

It needs to be pointed out that it doesn’t feature power take-off or auto-start. So, when you use it to extract the sawdust from your mitre saw, you need to manually switch the DCV584L on first. A slight inconvenience. That being said, we’ve seen hacks where intrepid tradesman have create remote pedal switches…We’re sure you can find the instructions if you look carefully enough…

A great feature of this vac is that it runs off any of the Dewalt 14.4v, 18v or 54v batteries. In addition, you can plug it into the mains via the supplied power cable.

In the box you get

  • HEPA filter
  • Crevice tool
  • Wide nozzle
  • Mains power cable

The DCV584L wet/dry vacuum cleaner is a great addition for anyone moving fully into the cordless woodworking world.

Dewalt Cordless Planer for Woodworking – What’s the Best?

Trimming a door or finishing a cabinet, anyone series about the discipline of woodworking needs a planer. Keeping with the cordless theme, we have a fantastic cordless planer for you to add to your kit.

For your cordless planer consideration, we present the Dewalt DCP580N. Click/Tap here to see it.

The first thing to know about the DCP580 is that is has a brushless motor. Brushless motors are more efficient to run, so you’ll get better run times from the batteries. It’s also more durable and can take a knock or bump, and there are no brushes to wear out. In terms of batteries, it requires a Dewalt XR 18v battery. It’s body-only, so you’ll need to use one you already own. It can also accept the 54v XR FlexVolt batteries. We’ve tested this and found a slight power increase, which is great news!

On the underside is a large twin blade drum with TCT blades for high quality surface finish, and you can get up to 2mm of cut per pass from the 82mm reversible blade, which the motor turns at 15,000rpm. Cutting increments are 0.1mm to give you loads of control over how much material the planer removes per pass.

It’s bundled with a dust bag, but you can also hook up the dust port to a dust extractor, or a vac like the DCV584L.

The DCP580 cordless, brushless planer from Dewalt is perfect for any woodworker, you can find it here.

Dewalt Cordless Nail Guns – Which Are the Best for Woodworking?

Woodworking jobs will often require a nailer at some point. Whether you need a first fix or a second fix gun from Dewalt, our guide has you covered.

We’ve selected a twin pack of cordless nail guns from Dewalt, bundled in a ToughSystem box. It’s the DCK264P2 and you can find it by clicking/tapping here.

In the box you get a charger, two 5Ah 18v XR batteries, a DCN692 first fix framing nailer and a DCN660 second fix finishing nailer. Ideal for chippies, for example.

A massive benefit in going for a cordless nail gun is that there’s no gas required to fire the nails. This means you can work at colder temperatures with ease, and there’s no gas to replace in the middle of a job.

Both nail guns have great features such as:

  • tool-free stall and jam clearance
  • tool-free depth adjustment
  • bump fire and sequential modes
  • ergonomic grips and well-balanced design

Dewalt Narrow Crown Stapler for Woodworking – What’s the Best?

You sometimes need a more delicate or narrow nail to finish your work piece off, and for jobs like this we recommend a narrow crown stapler, firing 16 gauge nails between 12mm and 38mm in length.

We’re recommending the Dewalt DCN681N 18V Cordless XR Brushless 18Ga Narrow Crown Stapler, click/tap here to see it (and it qualifies for Toolstop Finance).

The rear loading magazine holds 110 x 1.25mm diameter nails in lengths between 12 – 38mm, and it of course has sequential and bump fire modes. The motor is brushless, keeping the weight and size of the machine down, while ensuring reliability. Batteries and charger aren’t included, so use any of your existing 18v XR batteries.

A crown stapler like this is ideal for neat finishing jobs, including attaching upholstery to furniture, or when only a very narrow pin can be used to finish a workpiece.

The DCN681N is a great addition to any cordless woodworking set and would make up a great trio with the aforementioned twin pack from Dewalt. Click/Tap here to see all the spec.
